The statue of the man on horseback in Durham Market Place is of Charles William Vane Tempest Stewart, the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry. He was a Hussar, a commander for the Duke of Wellington, and known for his role in the Napoleonic Wars. His widow commissioned the statue, which was erected in 1861.
